Diagnostic accuracy of FNAC in salivary gland lesions

This study was undertaken to determine the usefulness of FNAC in the preoperative diagnosis of salivary gland lesions. Thirty four patients of salivary gland lesions were investigated during the period February 1999 to November 2001 with preoperative fine needle aspiration cytology followed by post operative" histopathological examination. There were 15 inflammatory and benign lesions, and 19 malignant lesions. Among the inflammatory and benign lesions, correlation of cytodiagnosis with histopathological diagnosis was found in 100% cases of chronic sialadenitis, 75% cases of pleomorphic adenoma, and 50% cases of Warthin's tumor . Among the malignant lesions, positive correlation was seen in 40% cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 66.7% cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, 100% cases of adenocarcinoma, 66.7% cases of epidermoid carcinoma and 50% cases of undifferentiated carcinoma. Overall diagnostic accuracy of FNAC of salivary gland lesions was 62.9%. The sensitivity of the technique was 88.2% and specificity was 80%. Hence FNAC is a sensitive and specific technique for preoperative diagnosis of salivary gland lesions.
