This study was carried out to determine the utility of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of skin tumours. 219 cytologically diagnosed fine needle aspirates of skin tumours were studied prospectively over a period of 17 months. Histopathological correlation was done wherever possible. Ill cases of benign and 108 cases of malignant skin tumours were diagnosed. Histopathological correlation, which was available in 135 cases, showed that the accuracy of fine needle aspiration biopsy in making the diagnosis was 97.17%. One false positive and two false negative diagnoses were made in this study. In outpatient departments, FNAC of skin tumours retains its utility as a primary diagnostic modality and follow-up procedure with a high degree of accuracy. While histopathology is the preferred mode of diagnosis of skin tumours, the authors recommend the use of FNAC as an adjunct to biopsy.
